The Ambassador of Canada to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) His Excellency Masud Husain hosted a reception on the occasion of the visit of The Honourable Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne. This was the first offical visit for Minister Champagne to the U.A.E. since he assumed his current role of Minister of International Trade on January 10, 2017. The reception was attended by Canadian and UAE government officials, business executives, CBC board members and the Co-Chairs for the Canada UAE Business Council (CUBC).
While in the U.A.E., Minister Champagne met with business and government representatives, including members of the Canada-U.A.E Business Council, to stimulate investment and reinforce trade relations, particularly in areas such as energy, renewables, and aerospace. This was the first official visit for Minister Champagne to the U.A.E.
Minister Champagne said that he was happy to see first-hand that the 150 Canadian companies working in the UAE were committed to sharing their knowledge and expertise, and that the companies were achieving real success, noted by the appreciation he has heard expressed. He also said that he looked forward to deepening Canada’s trade and investment ties to the UAE, to help our Canadian businesses succeed, and to continue to build on the great relationship that Canada has with the UAE. Minister Champagne mentioned that last year Canada exported $1.8 billion to the UAE and that the UAE was Canada’s biggest trading partner in the Middle East.
During his visit, Minister Champagne met with several UAE government officials including Sheikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chairpersons and Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) of several large UAE companies. Various UAE daily newspapers reported on his visit, and he was interviewed by CNN’s Becky Anderson.
