Notice of Annual General Meeting

Notice is hereby given that the Annual General Meeting (“AGM“) of the Canadian Business Council Abu Dhabi will be held on Wednesday, 14 June 2017 at 8:30pm for the following purposes:

  1. Report of the Board of Directors on the CBC activities in the past year.
  2. Receive the annual financial accounts and accompanying audit report from the auditors and, if deemed advisable, to approve the financial accounts.
  3. Re-appoint Deloitte & Touche as auditors for the financial year ending 30 April 2018.
  4. To elect new members of the Board of Directors to fill any vacant positions.

Pursuant to the CBC’s Constitution, only members in good standing (i.e. who have paid their membership fees) are entitled to attend and vote at the Annual General Meeting.  Members who are entitled to attend and vote but cannot be present may appoint a proxy to vote and attend in their place.  Please contact the CBC at 02 626 8663 or email: admin@cbcabudhabi.com for details on how to appoint a proxy.

The CBC Board of Directors currently has three (3) vacancies in 2017.  Three people have put forward their names for election.

Election procedure:

  • The Election Committee suggests voting by a show of hands as voting procedure at the AGM 2017 since the number of nominees equals the number of positions and therefore no position is contested. No secret ballot is required.
  • Ballots will not need to be distributed nor used as this is a not required by the Constitution and the Election Committee has deemed them unnecessary.

Proxy

Members who are entitled to vote but are not able to attend the AGM may appoint a proxy to vote in their stead. As stated by the Constitution, Corporate members shall designate one representative to exercise the Corporate Member’s voting rights (one vote per Corporate Member)- Article III Claus 12. Christine Belanger, Chartered MCIPD

Christine Belanger is based in Abu Dhabi since June 2007 with her husband and son. Her first-hand knowledge of local customs and business practices paired with her Canadian culture, professional and personal experiences has benefited the organizations and people she has worked for and dealt with.

INTEREST AND CONTRIBUTION WITH RESPECT TO THE CANADIAN BUSINESS COUNCIL

 As a Canadian, Christine takes pride in promoting Canada’s potential and successes.  This is especially important for her during her time in the Middle East region.  Being directly involved in the development of Abu Dhabi and the UAE on a daily basis via her work, she is knowledgeable of opportunities that would benefit the Canadian Business Community as a whole.

Working in the field of Human Resources, she is well accustomed with the UAE Government’s short and long terms goals with respect to the Vision 2030. Tangibly witnessing and managing the Emirati societal shift into the extensive growth and a sustainable future.

Having been a member of the CBC Abu Dhabi Board of Directors since 2015, she demonstrated her abilities in multiple spheres such as heading the Events Committee until November 2016, which created and delivered valuable and profitable events. Her contributions have as well included providing valuable advices to the Board and displaying her versatility and resourcefulness by taking the role of MC on major events such as Immigration, Real Estate & Tax Seminar 2015, Thanksgiving 2015 and 2016, and Maple Leaf Ball 2017.

Through the years in the region, Christine has built a highly reputable network from which she can refer to make her endeavors more meaningful and effective.

Christine is highly motivated to pursue her role as a member of the CBC Abu Dhabi Board of Directors and having the chance to become even more actively involved on the planning and operational side of the council’s prime activities and initiatives and to contribute to its strategic growth and importance in the Emirati capital.

Rana Kabbara

Founder, BOLD Solutions Provider

Rana Kabbara is the founder of BOLD Solutions Provider focusing on Business Organization and Leadership Development.  Rana brings over 20 years of practical experience including leadership development, human capital advisory, management consultancy, coaching, training and lecturing in Canada and the Middle East.

She is the author of the book “Leading with Elegance, Leading Self to Leading Others, Aisha and Hamad in the workplace” written and published in Arabic language helping local talent on their career journey.

Work Experience & Areas of Expertise:

Rana has consulted for global powerhouses including PricewaterhouseCoopers, IBM Business Consulting Services, Grant Thornton and was an HR Advisor for a Governmental Entity in Abu Dhabi before establishing BOLD Solutions Provider. She has lectured different courses and supervised graduation projects for undergraduate and graduate students. Her areas of expertise include: leadership development, human capital management, organizational development, and process improvement.

Qualification:

Rana earned her Master in Management Science (MSc.) from HEC Montreal and a Graduate Certificate in leadership from McGill University. She holds an executive coach certification from the Center for Executive Coaching in the USA. She recently completed a certificate in Strategic Human Resources Leadership from Cornell University.

She is fluent in English, French, and Arabic.

Reasons for Joining CBC Board:

–      To share my understanding of the Middle East and UAE local culture and partner with other board members in building business relationship in the region.

–      To bring my experience as a coach, advisor and facilitator to help finding solutions to challenges faced by the Canadian Business Council.

–      To share my knowledge as a small business owner who went through the experience of doing business in the UAE.

–      To contribute to the development and the implementation of the 2030 Canadian Business Council of Abu Dhabi Strategy, as a strategic thinker and result oriented person.

James Wilson

Manager, General Dynamics Mission Systems Canada

James Wilson has worked at General Dynamics Mission Systems Canada for over 23 years in a variety of roles and responsibilities such as System Engineering, Project Management, and Business Development. In addition to many years working on Canadian Programs, James has worked internationally in the United States, United Kingdom, and currently is residing in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

Over the last 5 years James has been working in Business Development on behalf of GDMS International. James has worked with GDMS-C and Local Partners to form a UAE Joint Venture – General Dynamics Mission Systems – Middle East in support of new business for GDMS Canada and International business units. James is also the GDMS-I relationship manager for the UAE offset program and is in the final negotiations with Tawazun Economic Council on the approval of its offset program.

James has been working closely with the Canadian Embassy and Canadian Business Council over the last 4 years and has been a CBC member since 2015. During this time, James has initiated his company’s sponsorship to the 2015 Canadian Business Council Summit/Canada Day Celebration and the Canadian Reception for IDEX 2017. James has also volunteered with the CBC/AD Sponsorship and Membership committee for 2016/2017.

Over the last year I have noticed significant momentum to establish CBC/AD as a relevant group for Canadians to meet, network, and do business within Abu Dhabi. I believe that we need to continue to break out of our previous model and bring in fresh perspectives into the council to attract new members, gain relevance and credibility with Canadian and Abu Dhabi businesses. I would like to be part of this team to continue to grow our business council.
