The Canadian Business Council Abu Dhabi - Community of Interest - Energy is pleased to organize a panel discussion regarding the CCUs and H2 driving COP28: Opportunities and Challenges. 

In the frame of raising the awareness about the concrete steps to be taken towards the net-zero emissions targets by 2025 to 2050, the CBC Abu Dhabi bringing experts in the field of Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) and the production of blue and green hydrogen in preparation for the COP28.

This event is followed by a networking reception.

    H.E. Kris Panday, Ambassador of Canada to the UAE

    Panelists:

    • Dr. Ahmed Aboudheir is the Chief Executive Officer of Delta CleanTech UAE and the President of Aboudheir Consulting Ltd. Experienced chemical engineer with a demonstrated history of working in the energy industry and research institutions for more than 35 years. Skilled in process design, process optimization, and process troubleshooting in the fields of gas processing, CO2 capture, and chemicals reclaiming and reuse. He has a B.Sc. & M.Sc. in Chemical Engineering, and a Ph.D. in Industrial Systems Engineering. He is a registered professional engineer with APEGA and APEGS. He has extensive peer reviewed publications in design and optimization of chemical/ petrochemical plants, hydrogen production reactors, post combustion capture process, and solvent/glycol reclaiming process. In April 2006, the Government of Saskatchewan, Canada, awarded Dr. Aboudheir the Commemorative Medal for the Centennial of Saskatchewan. The Medal recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to society and honors their outstanding achievements. Dr. Aboudheir recognized for his significant contributions in hydrogen production research and community leadership.
    • Rawad Barazanji, Process & Process Safety Team Team Leader at Sharjah National Oil Corporation (SNOC). Rawad is the Senior Process and Process safety team leader, Sustainability and Energy Intervention Lead at Sharjah National Oil Corporation. Rawad holds a Bachelor degree in Chemical Engineering and Masters degree in Process Technologies and Business Management specialized in Carbon Capture. Rawad is currently heavily involved in the support to achieve Net Zero at Sharjah National Oil Corporation as one of the pioneers in energy provision to the Emirate of Sharjah in UAE.
    • Adam Donald is the Global Technical Director for Geomechanics and Wellbore Acoustics with Reservoir Performance Division, SLB, based in Dubai, UAE. He joined SLB in 1998 as a wireline field engineer has held field, technical & management positions in Canada, USA, Norway, Malaysia, France, Romania, and United Arab Emirates. His area of focus has been on applications of wellbore measurements for hydrocarbon extraction within tight gas, unconventional, fractured carbonate, and conventional reservoirs around the world. More recently Adam has been involved with various Carbon Sequestration projects, specifically for site characterization and geomechanics evaluation of potential injection formations. He received his Bachelors in Geological Engineering from University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada (1998) and a master’s in mining engineering from Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia, Canada (2004). Adam holds numerous patents in areas of borehole acoustics and geomechanics and is a registered Professional Engineer in Canada (APEGA 2002).     • Evgeniya (Gen) Mitchell, Regional BD Manager, MENA – Energy Transition, Kent. Gen has over 16 years of energy industry experience and in her current role is responsible for positioning Kent as a leading global engineering, consulting and project delivery services company and driving growth in the growing the low carbon and renewables sector across the Middle East and North Africa region. Prior to joining Kent in May 2022, Gen held various roles with Wood (legacy Amec Foster Wheeler) within the sustainability, growth and development functions across the UK and Middle East regions. A member of the IRENA Alliance for Decarbonisation and Kent Sustainability Council, Gen is a strong advocate for connecting like-minded organisations and finding sustainable and practical solutions that support global energy transition ambitions. Gen earned a master’s degree in Politics and International Relations from the University of Aberdeen and a second master’s in International Marketing Management from Robert Gordon University.
    • Dr. Lourdes Vega, Director of the Research and Innovation Center on CO2 and Hydrogen (RICH) at the Khalifa University of Science and Technology, and Acting Senior Director at Petroleum Institute. Dr. Lourdes F. Vega is a Full Professor in Chemical Engineering, the Director and Founder of the Research and Innovation Center on CO2 and Hydrogen (RICH Center), and the Acting Senior Director of the Petroleum Institute at Khalifa University in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. She has developed her career between academia and industry, with relevant positions in the USA, Europe, and the UAE. With more than 220 publications, 10 commercialized products and 6 patents under exploitation, she is internationally recognized for moving fundamental science to the applied world in the areas of clean energy and sustainable products, focused on the whole value chain of hydrogen, CO2 capture and utilization, sustainable fuels, sustainable cooling systems, and water treatment. She has successfully led several large industrial-academic consortia related to hydrogen, CO2 utilization and multiscale modeling. Among other recognitions, she received in 2020 the Mohammed Bin Rashid Medal of Scientific Distinguishment for her contributions in clean energy and sustainable products, and the award in Physics, Innovation and Technology by the BBVA Foundation and Spanish Royal Society of Physics in 2013. She is an elected member of the MBR Academy of Scientists, a Corresponding Member of the Academy of Mathematics, Physical Chemistry and Natural Sciences of Granada, and an Elected Fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. She serves as a member of the Emirate Scientist Council, led by HE Sarah Al Amiri.

    Moderator:

    • Roy Dabbous is the Regional Director, MENA of Hatch. Roy Dabbous has over 26 years of professional experience in the global Energy, Mining and Metals industries within both Owner and Consulting companies. With a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical (Major) and Petroleum (Minor) Engineering, he joined Hatch in 2001 and has held several positions comprising of business management, project management and technical roles in various industries. This included work in the Energy (Oil & Gas, Power), Metals (Bauxite, Alumina, Aluminium, Iron & Steel) sectors and related Infrastructure. Based in the UAE for over 15 years, he is the currently the Regional Director for Hatch’s Business for the Middle East and North Africa. Roy brings a strong background in project execution and engineering with over 17 years of Project and Engineering management on various multidiscipline projects. This has included both multibillion dollar capex projects and a portfolio of smaller sustaining capital projects for clients in North America, Africa and the Middle East.
